Power Panel Demonstrates Active Snow Melt with Gen-2-O

The thought of solar energy conjures up images of warm and sunny climates for many people, but tropical climates aren’t the only places where solar makes sense.  In fact, the top 10 cities in the U.S. aren’t the sunniest ones. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) ranks Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York in the top 10 for states with the highest amount of installed solar in 2019, with large percentages of solar installations coming during winter weather months.

During the harsh winter months in colder climates, it is inevitable that solar panels will see their fair share of snow.  And while you don’t need to live in the tropics to achieve strong solar panel performance, solar panels cannot effectively harvest energy from the sun if they are blocked by snow.  Solar panels need sunlight to produce power, so if the panels are covered in snow, they will most often not generate electricity. As one could surmise, such energy loss can cause serious issues for those dependent on solar power for their electricity and hot water.

Most panels are tilted at an angle, so snow can slide off on its own accord, but that can take time… a lot of time.  While snow can always be removed with the appropriate tools, a snow-covered solar array is a perfect place to demonstrate the impressive power that can be generated by Power Panel’s solar thermal technology.

On January 26, 2019, the team at Power Panel recorded a demonstration of utilizing Power Panel’s Gen-2-O to actively melt snow off of solar collectors by using residual heat in its tank.  The results? In just about one hour, all four panels were free and clear of snow.  Additionally, the tank temperature had increased by a few degrees, and the system was already in the process of harvesting energy.

Power Panel’s portable Gen-2-O is easy to assemble, use and deploy, making it an ideal power source for harsh and remote environments.  To view the demonstration of the Gen-2-O snow melt, view the recap video here.  To learn more about Power Panel’s solar thermal technology and products, contact a product specialist.
